Description
Overview
Fight in the theatre of war that changed the world forever. Battle alongside your compatriots on some of the most inhospitable environments of the Eastern Front in Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45 RO places you in the most realistic WWII first-person multi-player combat to date on the PC, allowing the player to fight through some of the most intense combat of the war.
You can play as infantry, using a wide range of infantry weapons, or crew one of the many armored combat vehicles available in the game, from half-tracks all the way through to the most famous German and Soviet heavy tanks.
You can engage the enemy with everything from your bayonet at close quarters up to the massive 122mm cannon on the Soviet IS-2. And if that isn't enough, find an officer and a radio to call in thunderous artillery strikes to shake the enemy loose.
Review
Well, first of all I thought I should let you know that I’m not a big fan of realism in any fps game. I mean, I like it to a point but after that I believe it kills the game play. So first time I played this game I didn’t really liked it and I had some minor problems with not being able to view anything through the scope on sniper rifle. After researching online I was able to find out that lots of people were having problems with sniper rifle and all it takes is to update your video drivers.
After initial problems and disappointment I learned to like this game. Yes , If you like me with super duper hardware and 32 inch widescreen and spoiled by Half Life2, Far Cry and BF2142 graphics you might be disappointed with Red Orchestra graphics, especially if you try to run through the forest that’s where limit of this game is obvious.
Also the way you shoot and run in this game is way different then any other fps game and reason for that is …drum roll…” Realism”. You can’t run and shoot, you don’t have crosshairs on your screen, you actually have to aim with your iron sites, and you can’t bonnie hop. I believe if you got used to your average fps, then don’t play single player option. Use it for practice.
I learned to like this game by playing it together with my friends, especially if you planning on using tanks or anything on wheels. It’s very hard to drive tank and then try to stop it, switch seats with commander and shoot. If you have your buddy driving tank, then you can talk to him on teamspeak or any other communication software and tell him to stop or move 3 feet ahead, or just scream at him to back up as fast as possible because you see German tank zeroing on you…I believe if you play in pairs it could be very addictive and the way this game is, it does encourage teamwork.
After playing couple rounds, I started really enjoying the sounds of the battle. There is no annoying music or chatter. What you hear is what you would hear in real life. I also love the size of the maps; they are huge which makes sometimes for a slow paced game.
In the end, this game a very good break from your average fps. It’s a lot more real then call of duty, lot more dirty and gritty and it has excellent sound. It will run pretty much on any computer and it is distributed through Steam which makes it easy for install and support. Also I didn't see any cheaters or anything funny going on any of the servers..
So make sure you grab a buddy, headset and mic and give it a try…
