Prey review by stankyfingers

Overview

In Prey, players enter a living spaceship which enslaves alien races and devours humans for lunch. Prey turns the first person shooter genre upside-down with awesome new gameplay features like wall-walking and gravity flipping, making for intense single-player and multi-player experiences. Prey is built on a heavily modded version of the Doom 3 engine and is developed by critically acclaimed developer Human Head Studios under the direction of 3D Realms. Prey has a serious, dark story based on authentic Cherokee mythology. The game dives into emotional territory rarely explored by similar games as themes of tremendous sacrifice and responsibility surface throughout the story.

Tommy is a Cherokee garage mechanic, refuting his heritage and undecided about his next step in life. His world comes to a halt when an extraterrestrial crisis forces him to awaken spiritual powers from his long-forgotten birthright. Abducted with his people to a menacing mothership orbiting Earth, he sets out to save himself, his girlfriend, and eventually, the entire planet.

Review

Well I finally played Prey this past week. The story of Tommy the Indian and his epic fight against invading aliens, bent on domination over his reservation. Something to that effect anyway. Anyway they snatched up your super hot Cherokee girlfriend along with everybody else. So you know you gots to get her back, she’s freakin hot! Now before I go too far I'd like to talk about the mini games at the beginning right before the aliens come. Make sure you check out the jukebox with the super cool classic rock in it. And don’t forget to try you luck on the gambling machines (Indian reservation go figure) and the classic video game machine. I thought it was pretty cool to crank up some Ted Nugent and play the slot machine! Anyway I digress, moving on.

Really the plot is nothing new, evil aliens vs you the bad ass that got loose. What sets Prey apart is the use of portals and gravity defying walkways. Anyone who played Decent back in the day will feel right at home with the turning upside down and walking on the ceiling and walls at times. You never know when a portal is going to open up and have a nasty alien pop out and start shooting at you. Prey has many in game puzzles where you have to figure out how to flip around the environment and make use of your special super dooper Indian power that you recently acquired. The ability to "Spirit walk" allows you to walk through force fields and such, allowing you to flip switches and things to help you find your way through the ship.

Powered by the Doom 3 engine, the graphics are nice and everything runs pretty smooth. I thought they could have been a little more creative with the aliens but I thought the environment was nice. While some things were refreshing I found that the plot over all was weak, nothing new at all. The AI left a lot to be desired as well. The game was very easy and with no difficulty settings to be had your stuck with no challenges except for the occasional puzzle that might stump you for a couple minutes. Once you have beaten the game it allows you to have a step up in difficulty but who really cares then? I don’t see much replay value at all here. The multiplayer portion of this game seems like they just threw it in at the last moment. Deathmatch and team deathmatch are the only two modes and I thought the weapons were kind of lame over all. The whole gravity thing made it fun at times but not enough to hold my interest very long. I’d say check out the demo, if you like it buy the game. If not go to your nearest reservation bar and find that jukebox because Ted Nugent rules!
